We will look for droppings in the attic, nuts or food sources that maybe stored in the attic. animal trails in the attic, dive holes in the attic insulation, animal hair or fur, bird feathers, displacement of attic insulation, and even dead animals that maybe in the attic. As wildlife removal specialist we always inspect the outside of the house and roof line and not just the attic for animal entrance points or damage that would allow access into the attics by any type of wildlife. Sometimes noises in the attic can actually come from a animal that entered at the foundation and worked its way up the wall and into the attic. The foundation, crawlspace and or basement should be inspected also for animal entry. Many times we find that our customers have more than one animal or type of wildlife that is making the noises in the attic.
We first will be discussing animal noises in the attic. Primarily because we deal with animals in attics daily. Noises in the attic that are made by animals can vary dramatically from animal to animal as well as different times of the day or night.
Raccoon noises in the attic. Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
Racoons in the attic can make several different noises. Most raccoon noises in the attic occur at night in the evenings and early mornings when the raccoon goes out to find food and water and then returns in the early morning. Even what time of year can determine what type of a attic noise you might be hearing from a raccoon.
When a raccoon enters a attic for the first time the attic noise can range from a slight “thump” to what sounds almost like a tornado tearing your roof off. We have seen on many occasions basket ball size holes in brand new roofs that were tore open in less then an hour from a raccoon that wants in the attic. This is usually in the spring when a female raccoon is about to give birth and needs a den location in a hurry. We have also had customers call and tell us that when the raccoon was ripping open the louver end vent of their home, the noises in the attic was almost like someone was breaking into their house. Other times raccoons on their initial entry into a customers attic will push up the soffit where the roof and eave come together. This noise in the attic is a very slight “thumping” noise, and many customer don’t even know that they even have animal in their attic because they think it was possibly just something outside that made the noise. Once a raccoon is in an attic there several attic noises that can be heard at different times of the year. In December and January raccoons typically will breed. The noises that are heard in the attic at this time of year may sound like animals are fighting in the attic. This is the noise that raccoons make when the are breeding. Later on in the spring you may here ” chattering” noises in your attic. This is the sound that is heard from baby raccoons. When baby raccoons begin to move around you may start hearing a lot of these chattering noises in the attic sometimes even in the middle of the day.
Squirrel noises in that attic. Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
Squirrels in the attic can make all different noises at all different times of day depending on what type pf squirrel you may have in the attic Most customers that have fox squirrels or grey squirrels in their attic will hear movement in and out most of the day as fall nears. These squirrels are most generally bringing nuts into the attic to store for the long winter. Many times you can hear the noise or sounds in the attic or wall of the walnuts or acorns rolling around or being dropped down the wall cavities. Most of the times during the night fox squirrels and grey squirrels are sleeping and there is very little noises in the attic.
When red squirrels or “piney” squirrels get in your attic you can really hear a lot of different types of loud noises in the attic. Out of all the squirrels in attics these squirrels are big time chewers, many times they even will chew the wires in your attics, this could cause a house fire. You may hear gnawing noises, chewing noises, scratching noises, and lots of running noises. Pine squirrels or red squirrels move very fast and are quit aggressive. They will move in and out of the attic and up and down your walls all day long. But when night time comes, most of the time you will hear very little attic noises from pine squirrels.
Flying squirrels on the other hand are nocturnal and move in and out of attics primarily at night. Most customers who have colonies of flying squirrels in their attics will complain of hearing a light thumping noise or a slight knocking noise in the attic in the middle of the night. This is heard when flying squirrels jump from attic rafter to attic rafter.
Bat noises in the attic. Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
Most customers with bats in the attic do not even hear noises until the problem becomes serious. Bats are nocturnal and usually move in and out of the soffits and eaves at dusk and return early dawn. Most of the attic noises from bats will be a very slight scratching noises or “wing flutter” as they pull themselves with their wings through the soffits. Other noises that are heard in attics from bats are slight squeaking or a “clicking” noise. Many customers will hear these noises not just in the attics but also in the walls as bats push themselves up and down the wall cavities to avoid extreme temperature changes.
Bird noises in the attic. Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
Most of the time the customers that call with birds noises in the attic are hearing chirping noises in the attic or ceiling. American Animal Control service technicians find that these attic noises from birds are mostly found in bathrooms, not always , but most of the time. What happens is most bathroom fan vents will vent up through the attic and then out through a outside wall. Birds will pull the plastic louvers off these vents and build their nest in the fan vent duct. Not long after the baby birds are born they begin chirping constantly almost all day long. Most customer will hear these chirping noises in the attic or ceiling. Frequently customers will hear chirping noises in the attic at one end of their house only right below a louver gable end vent. Many times the screens in these vents will become damaged or torn allowing for birds to enter into the attic. Sometimes customer will say they hear a thumping noise in the attic as birds bang or crash into attic roof trusses as they are flying around. Most birds do not have as keen as senses as bats and they fly into these attic trusses as they get disoriented in attics. That’s why many times we will find dead birds in the attics.
Mouse noises in the attic.Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
Almost every one of customers have mice in their attic and at sometime will hear mouse noises in the attic. The most common noise mice make in the attic is a very light scratching noise. The problem identifying what may be causing this scratching noise sometimes is it happens mostly in the night when the whole house is very quiet and the noise can sound much louder than what it really is, therefore our customer will assume it is much larger than just mice in the attic. Our customers will hear these noises in the attic or the ceiling as mice like to scratch on the drywall ceiling under the attic insulation. As they “knead” their nest. Mice scratching noises can be heard also directly right above the attic hatch or access into the attic. This is a area where there is a lot of heat loss and as the attics get cold in the winter months mice will congregate at these attic hatches to stay warm. Many times when we move the attic hatch we will find lots of mouse droppings.
Other noises in the attic. Merrillville Indiana Pest Exterminating Service.
American Animal Control® LLC, service technicians are in and out of attics all day long doing inspections. Some times even our seasoned technicians will have a rough time figuring out exactly what animal may be making the noises in the attic that our customer is hearing. Occasionally we will discover that there is no animal in the attic making noises. Some times it is just a squirrel running on the roof or a raccoon walking on the roof. Often times raccoons will leave “litter boxes” on our customers roofs. Usually when this begins it is best to trap and remove the raccoon before he or she decides to get into the attic. Sometimes in the fall customers will call and say they hear a loud bang in the attic and then it sounds like something is running in the attic. We find that these customers sometime have walnut tree limbs that overhang their house and noise is the walnuts dropping and making a loud bang noise on the roof, then they roll all the way down the roof and into the gutter. And this is the “animal noise” they thought they were hearing in their attic.
Several of our technicians have arrived at customers homes who are hearing birds chirping in the attic and it turns out that the ceiling mounted smoke detectors batteries are just getting low and this is the low battery indicator noise.
