Reasons to need insulation removal
Bats in the attic can cause a lot more damage to attic insulation than what meets the eye. When one of our customers call with bats in the attic we always ask them if they have been up in the attic recently? Did you notice any bat guano or bat droppings on the insulation? Typically at first glance you will notice on the insulation droppings that appear to look like mouse droppings. At closer inspection most will find what we call “litter boxes”. These are areas in the attic where bats will hang at the ridge or in the rafters at the peak. This is a “roost” area and you will typically find a accumulation of bat guano or bat droppings directly below on top of the attic insulation. These are good signs that you may need attic insulation removal because of the possibility of contamination of histoplasmosis which is a infection by a fungus found in the droppings of birds and bats in humid areas. Histoplasmosis is not serious if confined to the lungs but can be fatal if spread throughout the body. What is not as obvious is all the urine and scattered droppings on the attic insulation or down the wall cavities where many times bats will roost and accumulate large amounts of bat guano as attic temperatures maybe to extreme at the ridge for roosting.
Raccoons in the attic will also leave droppings or raccoon feces and can cause lots of serious damage to your attic insulation. Raccoons in the attic accumulate large amounts of feces on the attic insulation. Because the large amounts of feces and urine that comes from a large animal as a raccoon, the weight and saturation to the attic insulation can even cause the drywall ceiling to collapse. Raccoon roundworm can also lead to serious health concerns when raccoons are living in the attic and leaving litter boxes all over the insulation.
The raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) is the common large roundworm or ascarid found in the small intestinal tract of raccoons. Adult worms measure 15 to 20 cm in length and 1 cm in width. They are tan-white in color, cylindrical and taper at both ends. If you have had raccoons in the attic for a period of time there is probably a good chance you will need insulation removal.
Mice in the attic can damage insulation enough that it may need to be removed from the attic or under belly of a mobile home. Mouse droppings or feces on and in attic insulation can also carry some health risks. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a serious respiratory disease transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings or saliva. Humans can contract the disease when they breathe in aerosolized virus. If insulation is in the attic, walls, or crawlspace and is contaminated from mice it should be removed.
Birds in attics can also damage and contaminate insulation. Birds will enter into attics of homes through damaged screens, vents, and soffit areas. Insulation acts as ideal nesting for birds. The need for insulation removal can be necessary in order to remove all the nesting and contamination from the birds. Bird dropping just like bats can contain histoplasmosis as well as other serious viruses or mites that can lead to severe sickness and diseases.
Mold in the attic is not uncommon when animals have been in attics and can causes concern for insulation removal. Holes in roofs, damage vents, and large amounts of animal waste and urine can give mold a perfect environment to spread. Mold can spread down walls and even get into HVAC systems. There are many types of molds and some have been linked to health concerns.
